Backend Engineer (SDE 1)

About the Role

This role focuses on key technical areas essential for a Backend Engineer (SDE 1).

Programming Basics

• Proficiency in programming languages, with Python/Go experience being a strong asset.
• Familiarity with our core tech-stack, including Kafka, AWS, and MySQL.

Data Structures

• Ability to solve data structures and algorithms problems, typically in a time-based interview format.
• Demonstrate critical thinking through:
  • Clearly reading and clarifying problem statements.
  • Considering edge-cases.
  • Dividing problems into smaller, testable sub-problems.
  • Using effective variable/function naming conventions.
• Understanding and explaining time complexity (optimal algorithms are not always strictly required).
• Understanding and explaining space complexity.

Database Schema Design

• Exhibit lower-level design skills, database management, and optimization techniques.
• Familiarity with relational database management systems (RDBMS) such such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle.
• Experience in designing and implementing normalized database schemas is beneficial.
• Knowledge of non-relational database systems like MongoDB or Cassandra is a plus.
• Experience in data modeling, normalization, denormalization, indexing, and query optimization is also a plus.

Testing and Debugging

• Proficiency in unit testing, integration testing, and debugging techniques.

Requirements

• 1-3 years of hands-on experience in designing, developing, testing, and deploying small to mid-scale applications in any language or stack.
• 2+ years of recent and active software development experience.
• Clear and concise communication skills.
• Ability to clearly express thoughts and opinions.
